Discussion: Character Appeals and Advertising

Discussion: Character Appeals and Advertising

Q Assignment Instructions Complete the following Discussion Forum assignment by finding a FULL-PAGE MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENT that uses at least two different character appeals and answering the questions below. (Note--it must be a full-page magazine ad, nothing else.) Thousands of FULL-PAGE MAGAZINE ADVERTISMENTS are available online. Google image search (Links to an external site.) is a great place to start, but there are many other resources. Click here for links to Print Ads Online via my website. (Links to an external site.) (To avoid confusion, please note that the other sections of my website don't apply to our class.) ________________________________________ To receive credit, you will create two posts. Post One: Supply the following information and analysis in a post of no less than 200 words: 1. A link to the ad so we can view it. (See the insert link button in the second row above, second icon from the left.) Remember: It must be a full page magazine ad, not a billboard, a newspaper ad, pictorial, catalog page, or anything else. Stay away from ad parodies; these are fake ads designed to make a statement. If in doubt, choose something else. 2. Who is the audience for the ad? How can you tell? 3. Context is where, when, and under what circumstances an argument appears. What is the context for this ad? (Consider the reason it was published, the timing of the ad, and where it was likely published, i.e., the type of magazine.) 4. How does this context help or hurt the ad's ability to persuade the target audience? 5. How does the ad generate trust and authority? (Consider logos, familiar slogans, who and what appears in the ad, tone, overall appearance, etc.) 6. Do you believe the ad is ultimately effective or ineffective at persuading its target audience? Why? Post Two: After you have finished, please respond to at least one of your classmates. Remember, quick, mindless comments such as "This is good," are not acceptable. I am looking for analytical responses. Can you see any additional character appeals in his or her selected ad? Do you think the ad is effective or ineffective? Why? For whom? Explain your findings in detail, 100 words minimum.

The audience for this advertisement can be divided into two. One group of its target audience are those who prefer fast food options but are looking for healthier alternatives. The other group belongs to the healthier segment who are on the lookout of consuming something that emulates fast food but will not harm their physical health.
